Note: Züglete is a local word for moving livestock from one place to another. In this case, it is an Alpabzug, the descent from the high Alpine pasture toward the valley as the summer grazing season comes to an end.
The Gstaad Züglete will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, bringing decorated cattle, farming families, bells, music, regional products, and agricultural demonstrations into the center of the village.
New: There is a Gstaad Züglete Update added on August 28, 2026.
The programme is expected to begin during the morning with ceremonial bell ringing. Herds will then arrive at intervals as farming families complete their journeys from summer grazing areas toward lower pastures. Some animals and farmers will already have walked for several hours before reaching the Promenade.
The flowers and large bells make the procession visually memorable. Beneath the celebration, however, is a practical agricultural movement: the Alpine grazing season is coming to an end.
Züglete is related to the Swiss German verb zügeln, meaning to move or relocate.
In this setting, it refers to the transfer of animals and farming activity between mountain and valley. The cattle are not assembled merely for a parade. Their movement is connected to the seasonal availability of pasture.
During the warmer months, cattle, sheep, and goats are taken to higher elevations where additional forage becomes available. Farmers care for the animals, maintain fences and buildings, manage pastures, and often process milk into cheese on the Alp. As temperatures fall and the growing season ends, the animals return to lower ground.
The public procession turns one part of that working cycle into a community occasion.
In 2023, UNESCO added Switzerland’s Alpine pasture season to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The recognition does not apply only to decorated cattle descents. It includes knowledge of livestock, grazing, dairy production, mountain buildings, landscape maintenance, cooperation among farmers, celebrations, and the transfer of practical skills between generations.
The detailed Swiss nomination document shows that the heritage is a complete seasonal system rather than one picturesque day. Work begins before the animals ascend and continues after they return.
The Züglete is therefore best understood as a visible conclusion to months of activity that most visitors never see.
Decoration distinguishes a ceremonial descent from an ordinary livestock transfer.
Flowers publicly mark the end of the summer season and allow farming families to present animals they have cared for during the preceding months. Large bells and embroidered straps give the movement a ceremonial sound and appearance.
Livestock bells also have practical roots. Sound helps a farmer detect animals spread across uneven terrain, vegetation, darkness, or fog. In a procession, the bell becomes larger and more symbolic, but its relationship to herd management remains part of its meaning.
The opening bell ringers emphasize sound even before the cattle arrive. The village hears the event approaching before every animal becomes visible.
The seasonal movement of livestock is much older than the organized Gstaad street event.
Local English-language reporting described the 2025 Züglete as the tenth edition of the modern public festival. The event began on a smaller scale and developed into a coordinated day involving farming families, market stalls, music, craft demonstrations, and large crowds.
That distinction is useful. The agricultural practice is historic, while the Promenade festival is a recent way of making it publicly visible.
Traditions do not always survive by remaining unchanged. A working custom may acquire a new form that allows a wider community to understand and support it.
Although the public programme is organized, the animals are not stage equipment.
Local reporting emphasizes that the timing of individual descents depends partly on pasture conditions and decisions made by farming families. If forage remains available at higher elevations, a herd may not return merely because a public schedule would prefer it.
That practical independence protects the meaning of the event. The festival coordinates and interprets the movement, but it does not create the agricultural need behind it.
Gstaad is internationally associated with hotels, boutiques, restaurants, skiing, concerts, and elite sporting events.
During the Züglete, cattle occupy the Promenade and farmers determine the day’s principal movement. The pedestrian center becomes a route between pasture areas rather than only a shopping and hospitality district.
This does not reveal one “real” Gstaad while making everything else artificial. Tourism and farming have developed beside one another for generations.
The event matters because it makes their relationship visible. The green landscape admired by visitors is also land managed through grazing, mowing, fencing, drainage, transport, and seasonal labor.
The announced programme includes market stalls, regional food, music, a demonstration dairy, bell-related craft, and activities for children. A Menuhin Festival performance at the Kapälli is planned between cattle arrivals.
These additions help explain the wider system around the animals. Milk becomes cheese. Bells require metalworking and decorated straps. Pasture work depends on tools, buildings, transport, and knowledge.
The cattle remain the center of attention, but the surrounding programme shows that Alpine agriculture involves a network of skills rather than a single procession.
Crowds and mobile-phone photography can create risks around large animals.
Visitors should remain behind barriers, follow the instructions of farmers and stewards, and avoid stepping into the route for photographs. The animals need space to move as a herd through an unfamiliar and crowded setting.
Dogs should be kept under close control and away from the cattle route.
The Gstaad Züglete is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2026, along the Promenade.
The programme begins during the morning and continues into the late afternoon. Herds are expected to arrive at intervals rather than in one continuous parade.
The final sequence and approximate arrival times should be checked when the detailed programme is released. Weather, forage conditions, and decisions by individual farming families can affect the movement.
Visitors should dress for variable September weather and use public transportation where practical.

The eighteenth National Hiking Day organized by Schweizer Familie will take place in Gstaad on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Three walking routes and a separate bicycle and e-bike course will begin and end at the ice-rink grounds beside Gstaad railway station. The programme also includes children’s activities, guided village visits, food stands, regional music, and an evening concert.
Participation in the walks is free, and general advance registration is not required.
The event does not treat every walker as though distance alone determines difficulty.
The shortest route covers approximately 5.1 kilometers, with about 100 meters of ascent and descent. It passes through the village, follows part of the Saane, and returns to the event grounds. The organizer describes it as suitable for families and pushchairs.
Guided assistance can be requested for visually impaired participants. Those requesting assistance must contact the organizers by August 14.
The intermediate route is approximately 8 kilometers long, with 236 meters of climbing. It enters the Turbach valley and connects the village with farms and the cheese grotto area.
The longest walk covers approximately 11.9 kilometers, with 290 meters of ascent and descent. It links Gstaad and Schönried before returning by a higher panoramic path.
The bicycle and e-bike course is approximately 16.2 kilometers long, with 403 meters of climbing toward Turbach. It can be completed with the accompanied group or independently on the marked route.
These distinctions matter in mountain country. Two routes with similar distances can feel entirely different because of gradient, surface, altitude, weather, and mobility.
Switzerland’s yellow hiking signs emerged from a practical conflict between walkers and motor traffic.
During the early twentieth century, roads that had once served people on foot became increasingly dominated by automobiles. Zurich teacher Jakob Ess became concerned after leading pupils along the traffic-heavy Klausen Pass.
Ess and other supporters founded a Zurich walking-path organization in 1933. A national association followed in 1934, and yellow signs with black lettering were selected as a common system.
The signs were not created merely to decorate scenic paths. They were part of an organized attempt to establish safer, connected walking routes away from increasingly busy roads.
Concern over the loss and paving of traditional paths continued after the Second World War.
In 1979, Swiss voters approved constitutional protection for footpaths and hiking trails. Federal legislation followed in 1985, establishing public responsibilities for planning and maintaining connected networks.
Today, Switzerland has more than 65,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails and tens of thousands of signs. The system includes ordinary walking paths, mountain routes, and technically demanding Alpine trails.
The trail network is therefore not an accidental collection of popular walks. It is a form of national and cantonal infrastructure supported by law, mapping, standards, maintenance organizations, municipalities, and volunteers.
Swiss hiking culture depends on more than signs placed at junctions.
The Federal Office of Topography produces detailed maps and digital tools showing contours, terrain, settlements, transport, water, forests, and different categories of trail. Its English map-reading guide explains how to interpret scale, coordinates, elevation, and landscape features before beginning a route.
The distinction between ordinary hiking trails, mountain paths, and Alpine routes is especially important. A route shown on a map is not automatically suitable for every walker.
National Hiking Day makes that difference visible by publishing length and elevation information and offering several routes rather than presenting one walk as universally appropriate.
The routes also reveal that Gstaad is not a single landscape.
The shortest course remains close to the village center, river, railway, and festival grounds.
The intermediate walk enters Turbach, where farming and food production become more visible. The longest route connects settlements and elevated paths across a broader section of the Saanenland.
Together, the walks connect the internationally known resort center with the valleys, farms, and working landscape around it.
The day continues after participants return.
The programme includes children’s storytelling, guided village visits, the Kinderchörli Saanenland, a participatory Menuhin Festival family concert by the Metzler Family Band, Pepe Lienhard and his band, and traditional music by Ländlerfründe Walopsee.
The event grounds give people completing different routes at different times a common place to return, eat, listen, and meet.
The event grounds open at 8:00 AM on Saturday, August 29.
Walking and cycling departures take place between approximately 9:00 and 11:30 AM, depending on the selected route.
Gstaad railway station is directly beside the event area. The organizer recommends public transportation because parking in the village is limited and paid.
Participants should bring suitable footwear, water, and clothing for changing weather. The programme is planned for varying weather conditions, although routes may be adjusted if safety requires it.

Gstaad Alive is bringing live music, food, drinks, and an informal gathering place to Kapälliplatz through Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The temporary venue opens daily from 11:00 AM. Its operator, Barproject, lists a changing programme of concerts and performances rather than one fixed daily schedule. Anyone travelling for a particular musician should check the latest programme before setting out.
The event is small beside the international festivals and sporting competitions associated with Gstaad. Its importance comes from where it takes place. Kapälliplatz stands directly on the Promenade, allowing music and conversation to enter the everyday movement of the village.
Gstaad’s pedestrian center may now look inevitable, but it resulted from decades of debate about traffic.
Motor vehicles were passing through the village by the end of the nineteenth century. By the 1960s, the main street had become increasingly congested. Several early bypass proposals failed, and the problem continued to grow. A traffic count in 1985 recorded approximately 11,000 vehicles moving through Gstaad in a single day.
Work on the bypass and tunnel began in June 1995. The bypass opened with a public festival on 27 October 1997; the former village road was then converted into the pedestrian Promenade in stages during the spring months of 1998 and 1999. The wider traffic project cost about CHF 52 million.
A professional planning article published while the work was under way documents the redesign of the village street and shows that pedestrianization was an intentional civic project, not simply a cosmetic improvement. The original German article is available through the ETH-affiliated E-Periodica archive as a historical document.
Removing traffic does more than reduce noise. It changes what people can do in a central space.
A road is organized around movement through a place. A pedestrian square permits people to remain. Tables, performances, processions, markets, conversations, and unplanned meetings can occupy space that was previously controlled by vehicles.
Gstaad Alive is one visible result of that older decision. The summer stage does not require a separate festival ground or permanent hall because Kapälliplatz already functions as a shared civic area.
Most concerts create a clear division between the event and everything outside it. The audience enters a building or enclosed site, attends a scheduled programme, and leaves when it finishes.
An open-air stage on the Promenade works differently. Someone may arrive specifically for a performance, hear music while walking from the station, remain for only part of the programme, or return several times during the season.
That openness gives the venue a role beyond entertainment. Residents, seasonal workers, families, hotel guests, and day visitors can occupy the same space without all participating in precisely the same way.
Barproject’s archive shows that Kapälliplatz has hosted several summer and winter installations in recent years, including earlier summer bars, New Year gatherings, and music events. Gstaad Alive is therefore becoming a recurring use of the square rather than a single experiment.
Each installation remains temporary, but the larger idea has gained continuity: the pedestrian center can operate as an outdoor cultural room without walls.
Gstaad Alive continues at Kapälliplatz through August 16, 2026.
The venue opens daily from 11:00 AM. Closing times and individual performances vary, so the current programme should be checked directly.
Kapälliplatz is in central Gstaad, within walking distance of the railway station.

Zweisimmen’s summer festival returns on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, 2026, transforming Bahnhofstrasse into a gathering place for food, music, shopping, and conversation.
The programme begins on Friday with a Fyrabäbier, the Swiss German expression for an informal beer at the end of the working day, accompanied by a DJ. Saturday brings a market, food stalls, live music, and Dr läng Tisch, or “the long table.” A temporary fairground on Bärenplatz will operate on both days.
The table is more than a convenient place to eat. It changes the character of the celebration by placing residents, families, business owners, and visitors beside one another in a shared public space. People who might otherwise sit at separate restaurant tables become part of the same gathering.
That idea has an interesting resonance in Zweisimmen, a community whose history has repeatedly been shaped by meetings, markets, roads, and exchanges between different valleys.
Zweisimmen stands where the Kleine Simme and Grosse Simme meet in the Bernese Oberland. The settlement appears in written records as early as 1228, when its name was recorded as Duessimenes.
Its location helped determine its importance. During the Middle Ages, routes through the area led toward the Valais and Lake Geneva. Several castles and fortified sites, including Mannenberg, Reichenstein-Terenstein, Blankenburg, and Steinegg, watched over these approaches.
The village was not only a point through which people traveled. According to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, the assembly of the Obersimmental met annually beneath a linden tree at a junction in the center of Zweisimmen. The Bernese castellan also held court there.
The 2026 summer festival is not presented as a continuation of those medieval assemblies. Nevertheless, the historical parallel is striking. Once again, a central part of the village is being used as a place where the surrounding community can meet face to face.
Commerce also has deep roots here. In 1644, annual cattle fairs previously held in Lenk and Boltigen were transferred to Zweisimmen and nearby Blankenburg. Cattle and cheese from the area were exported, particularly to Italy and Germany, bringing income into the upper Simmental.
Local people also earned money through carpentry, woodcarving, marquetry, and pottery. These activities connected agriculture with the skilled trades that developed around a regional market center.
The market and food mile planned for the summer festival therefore belong in a place with a long history of bringing producers, craftspeople, merchants, and customers together. Today’s stalls are part of a modern community event, but the underlying activity—meeting in the village to exchange goods, food, information, and conversation—is much older.
The organizer is the Gewerbeverein Zweisimmen, the local trade association. Its involvement gives the occasion a practical connection to the businesses and services that keep the village active throughout the year.
Zweisimmen’s development accelerated as its transport connections improved. A mule track toward Saanenmöser formed part of the route between Thun and Montreux. Construction of a carriage road through the Simmental and onward toward Saanen between 1816 and 1845 made travel and trade easier.
The village had to rebuild following a serious fire in 1862. Hotels began appearing from 1881, as improved access brought increasing numbers of travelers into the valley.
Railway construction between 1897 and 1905 connected Montreux, Zweisimmen, and Spiez. A branch from Zweisimmen to Lenk followed in 1912. These lines helped turn an established market community into a climatic and tourist resort. Winter facilities began developing around the Rinderberg during the early twentieth century.
The railway remains central to Zweisimmen’s identity. Its station connects the Montreux Oberland Bernois narrow-gauge network with the standard-gauge BLS line toward Spiez and Interlaken. Modern variable-gauge technology now allows GoldenPass Express carriages to change gauge at Zweisimmen, enabling passengers to travel between Montreux and Interlaken without changing trains.
This makes Bahnhofstrasse an especially appropriate setting for a public celebration. The street leading to the station occupies part of a village shaped by arrivals, departures, connections, and the movement of people between regions.
Zweisimmen is part of the Gstaad holiday region and a gateway to the internationally known resort. The railway continues west through Saanenmöser, Schönried, and Saanen toward Gstaad, while the Rinderberg provides a mountain connection with the larger regional ski area.
Zweisimmen should not, however, be understood merely as the place visitors pass through on their way somewhere else. It possesses its own history, businesses, agricultural landscape, cultural institutions, and community life.
The summer festival makes that distinction visible. It is not built around a distant celebrity, an exclusive venue, or an audience separated from the performers. Its center is a street, and its defining object is a table.
That makes the event a useful addition to a broader account of the Gstaad region. International concerts, tennis tournaments, polo matches, and luxury hospitality form one part of the area’s identity. Local markets, volunteer organizations, family gatherings, food stalls, and village celebrations form another.
For two days, Bahnhofstrasse will become more than a route through Zweisimmen. It will serve as a market, dining room, fairground, meeting place, and evening stage. The long table gives these different activities a common center, inviting people not simply to attend the festival but to sit down together.

A new Airbus H145 D3 rescue helicopter entered service at the Rega base in Zweisimmen on July 1, 2026. It replaced an AgustaWestland AW109 SP Da Vinci that had been in service for more than 16 years.
The H145’s five-bladed rotor provides very low cabin vibration. Airbus says the five-bladed configuration offers 150 kilograms more useful load than the earlier four-bladed H145. Its redesigned cabin provides additional space for the crew, patient and medical equipment, while its enclosed Fenestron tail rotor improves safety in flight and around the aircraft on the ground.
The Zweisimmen crew completed 629 missions during 2025. Its work includes assisting injured hikers, bikers, climbers and winter-sports visitors, primarily in the western Bernese Oberland. The crew also assists colleagues from Rega’s Lausanne base in nearby French-speaking Switzerland.
For Gstaad and the surrounding mountain communities, this is more than an equipment change. The new helicopter gives the nearest Rega base greater useful-load capacity, a roomier treatment area and safety improvements relevant to rescue work in ski areas, along hiking routes and across remote Alpine terrain.
The aircraft arrived as part of the largest procurement project in Rega’s history. By the end of 2026, Rega plans to deploy 21 H145 D3 helicopters across its 14 operational bases, creating a uniform rescue-helicopter fleet.

Plans to redevelop Gstaad’s sport and cultural facilities have cleared an important land-use planning stage.
The Canton of Bern’s Office for Municipalities and Spatial Planning has approved amendments to the building regulations and zoning plan for the Saanematte site, approximately 500 metres southwest of Gstaad’s village centre.
At Saanen’s municipal assembly on September 19, 2025, voters approved the amendment by 109 votes to 16. The cantonal office granted its approval on April 17, 2026. Following official publication on June 9, the new rules took effect on June 10, 2026.
The larger proposal includes a permanent concert hall to replace the existing festival tent, a multipurpose sports and event hall to replace the ageing tennis hall, and redesigned outdoor areas incorporating tennis and beach-volleyball courts. The existing swimming-pool building, curling hall, rooftop miniature-golf course and accommodation buildings are intended to remain.
The new concert hall is planned as a year-round cultural venue, while the multipurpose hall would accommodate sports, exhibitions, community events and other activities. Together, the facilities are intended to serve residents, local organizations, visitors and cultural productions.
The zoning decision does not itself authorize construction. The existing Development Plan No. 44, “Saanematte,” must still be revised, while detailed designs, building permits and final construction financing will require their own decisions. The approval instead establishes the land-use framework needed for those stages to proceed.
The project would bring major cultural programming, community recreation and visitor infrastructure together on one coordinated site. Its stated purpose is to improve Gstaad’s sports, leisure and cultural facilities for both the local population and tourism.

Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Belgium’s Raphael Collignon 6–4, 6–7(3), 6–3 to win the 2026 EFG Swiss Open Gstaad. The final lasted two hours and 17 minutes and gave the Greek player his thirteenth ATP Tour singles title.
The victory ended a title drought of nearly 17 months. Tsitsipas arrived in Gstaad after a difficult period in his career but won four three-set matches during the tournament. He also became the first Greek player to win the Swiss event.
Collignon’s performance was significant as well. The 24-year-old reached his first ATP Tour final and rose to a new career-high position in the rankings.
The result gave Gstaad a compelling final built around two different forms of renewal: an established champion recovering his momentum and an emerging player reaching a new level of his career.

Harry’s Bar, the London private members’ club belonging to the Birley Clubs, is beginning its first summer residency at The Alpina Gstaad.
The outdoor residency runs from July 18 through July 31, with service scheduled daily from 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM. The menu focuses on the Italian dishes associated with Harry’s Bar and presents them in an intimate Alpine setting. (The official pop-up page also lists lunch Friday–Sunday, 12:30 PM–3:00 PM). Reservations required.
This is more than a temporary restaurant collaboration. It reflects a continuing trend in Gstaad toward short seasonal residencies that bring established international hospitality names to the resort without turning them into permanent local fixtures.
Reservations are required. Anyone planning to attend should confirm availability directly with The Alpina Gstaad rather than relying on walk-in seating.

WoW Gstaad will return on August 29 and 30, 2026, for the sixth edition of its international literature festival. The two-day programme combines author conversations, interviews, workshops, shared meals, and walks through the surrounding landscape.
Participating writers include Booker Prize winner DBC Pierre and acclaimed novelists Susie Boyt, Jill Dawson, and Sadie Jones. Their work encompasses dark comedy, historical fiction, family relationships, psychological observation, and the ways individuals respond to difficult circumstances.
The scale of the festival is part of its appeal. Instead of separating writers from audiences in a large convention setting, WoW Gstaad emphasizes conversation and sustained encounters.
The event also adds another dimension to the region’s summer calendar. Gstaad is internationally associated with music, tennis, and hospitality, but a literary festival creates space for a quieter form of cultural exchange built around language, attention, and ideas.

The Menuhin Festival Gstaad is marking its 70th edition with more than 75 performances between July 16 and September 5, 2026. Founded by violinist and humanist Yehudi Menuhin in 1957, the gathering grew from two concerts in Saanen into one of Switzerland’s leading classical-music festivals.
This anniversary season also begins a new artistic chapter. Daniel Hope, who became intendant in November 2025, has chosen “Family Matters” as the theme of his first programme. The idea refers not only to relatives who perform together, but also to artistic friendships, musical traditions and connections between generations.
Leading orchestras and soloists appearing during the summer include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Royal Danish Orchestra, Pinchas Zukerman, Khatia Buniatishvili, Sir András Schiff and Daniil Trifonov.
Concerts take place in Gstaad’s Festival Tent and the historic churches of Saanen, Zweisimmen, Lauenen, Gsteig and Rougemont.
New formats broaden the celebration beyond conventional performances. The Summit considers questions involving culture, society and technological change, while the President’s Hikes combine walking with personal encounters and musical interludes. Mountain Spirit concerts on the Eggli connect the programme directly with its Alpine setting, while a film series and family concerts offer further ways to experience the festival.
